RWB Nostalgia

Was looking through some old photographs today when I had a nostalgic moment.

February 18, 2008.

That was the first day I ever laid eyes on a full-fledged RWB Porsche during a track day at Tsukuba Circuit.

Prior to this I'd only seen these mythical beasts in the black and white pages of Autoworks magazine. To see one in the flesh was incredible to say the least.

It's pretty unreal to see how much exposure Nakai-san's little body shop has gotten since then. Now, just a few years later the man is working his magic on cars from around the globe.

Long live RWB!

Apologies for the lack of updates here recently. I've been quite busy with SEMA and other work projects. Not to mention wasting my free time with a little something called Battlefield 3 :)

In other news I'll be heading back to Japan for a couple weeks in January-February. Going to a friend's wedding and planning to hit a couple events while I'm there. Should be fun.

Anyway, here's another cool scene from Shakotan Boogie Vol. 23.

More to come.

The Form vs Function Debate - Shakotan Boogie Style

I was reading...or trying to read Shakotan Boogie Vol.3 the other day when I found a story that I quite liked since it dealt with never-ending debate between form and function. Thought I'd share a couple quick scenes that show the just of it. Keep in mind this was all written back in the late 1980s!

So basically Koji and Hajime (the two main characters) are out one day when they run into an old friend from elementary school, Okazaki-kun. Okazaki drives a supercharged AE86 and the guys quickly get into a discussion about cars.

Okazaki tells the guys that Shakotan Yankee style is the old way and that the new thing is function and driving performance. He's a proud "Car Boy". "Look, a pack of cigarettes doesn't even fit under the car!", he tells Hajime when checking out his Soarer. Hajime responds by telling him that's something he's quite proud of.

The three of them go for a spin in the 86, when they roll up on a shakotan Cedric. Okazaki tries to initiate a battle, Car Boy style by flashing his headlights at the Cedric.

The Cedric is driven by an acquaintance of Hajime and Koji named Toshi. He stops the Cedric and asks Okazaki what the hell he's doing, nearly beating the crap out of him. Later, Okazaki introduces Hajime and Koji to some his Carboy friends. The two buddies aren't really feeling the whole car nerd scene.

...until they find out there's girls involved.

Once they know this could be a way to pick up chicks, Hajime and Koji change their Yankee fashion, raise the Soarer and become Car Boys.

That night they all go out for some touge driving with the girls in their Starlet, when they get passed up by Jun and Akira in their shakotan cars.

<

Everyone talks about how cool the Z and the Hakosuka looked as they overtook the group.

Later, the three guys are standing near Okazaki's car when a couple girls comment on its lame stance and lack of shakotan. Okazaki shakes it off, saying they don't understand the sophistication of his 86 and that a car is not to be used for nampa (picking up chicks).

At this point, the nampa-crazed Hajime and Koji decide to revert to their shakotan yankee ways, bringing their Soarer back to its original style. While cruising around the see a girl walking down the street and go into full nampa mode...

...only to find that the girl is already being pursued by Okazaki in his shakotan-converted 86.

Hajime and Koji have a new rival for picking up chicks in town and the story comes to an end.

This is why I love Shakotan Boogie.

A Reborn Datsun 510: How Cool Could it Be?

$

With all of the buzz about the new Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ, as well as the Chevy 130R concept that was shown in Detroit this week - I started doing some thinking. Or should I say, some daydreaming.

If the 86/BRZ turns out to be successful, there's a good chance Nissan will want to answer back with an affordable rear-drive car of its own.

Many are hoping this new car would be a reborn Silvia to attack the 86 head on - but do you know what might be even better? A revival of the classic Datsun 510.

The 510/Bluebird is a car that holds a legendary reputation across the world. A reputation for being inexpensive, practical, and most of all fun. It's also car that proved itself in motorsport when it was new and is still a favorite among grassroots and vintage racers around the world.

Imagine the possibilities if Nissan decided to release a small rear-drive car in the vein of the '68-'73 510. While the a new 510 probably wouldn't have the same low center of gravity as the purpose-built 86/BRZ it would make up for it in practicality and interior space.

Think less "sports car" and more "sports sedan". I'm Imagining something roughly the size of a current Honda Civic but with an FR layout.

Just like the original, this re-imagined 510 would be available as a four-door sedan. Perfect for those who want a fun, cheap rear-driver but need more interior space than the 86/BRZ and its tiny, backseat offer. The fact that the 86/BRZ are essentially two-seaters is surely something that will keep away buyers who can only have one car in their household.

A coupe version could also be available, something that would occupy the spot of the rumored Silvia successor. Perhaps this would take some styling cues from the Bluebird SSS Coupe. Full width rear taillight anyone?

At that point, there could also be a five-door hatchback/wagon version. Perfect for those who want maximum utility without sacrificing fun. Sounds like something that would go over well in hatchback-friendly markets like Japan and Europe.

For a powerplant, I'm imagining maybe an NA direct injected four-cylinder making somewhere in the range of 200 horsepower. Something with a decent torque curve that's still fun to rev out. It'd come with a 6-speed manual as well as some sort of modern automatic box.

With the groundwork for the chassis laid, Nissan could also go upmarket with the platform and give Infiniti a nice competitor for the BMW 1-series. Maybe with a bit of forced induction?

Like the 86/BRZ, this reborn 510 wouldn't be fast, but it would be plenty of fun. It would also be something you could load up with a few friends or family members and take for a weekend road trip.

The target for this car would essentially be the Volkswagen GTI, but with the rear wheels providing the power.

Nissan has proven it can play and win in the high end performance market with the GTR. It's also done well with the Fairlady Z. Now, how about something for the little guy?

Hey Nissan, I'll be right here waiting for you to hire me so we can get started on this.

Who wants one?

I've been home for a week now, dealing first with jetlag and now a pesky cold that was probably brought on by a lack of sleep. Fantastic.

Anyway, while in Japan I shot a massive number of photos with my iPhone. The 7d got troublesome to lug around all the time, so I ended up relying on the good old cell phone cam quite a bit.

Here's the first batch of iPhone photos I selected randomly. I don't think the results are all too bad really.
